“Microsoft foes were busy on other fronts as well. A small
company called Red Hat Software has developed Linux, an operating
system designed to challenge Microsoft Windows. The software is
given away on the Internet or can be purchased commercially for
$50. The Intel Corp. and Netscape liked Linux well enough to
purchase minority stakes in Red Hat. Red Hat hopes to build a
profitable business by providing customer service and technical
support for the free operating system.”
