Interesting point about Dell, as it is not a “Unix” vendor, but
Linux is lumped into the group. I’d be interested in seeing the
Linux numbers for the quarter, if Dell got that kind of percentage
with Linux alone. And that’s sales alone. What about VA, Penguin,
etc, and how about downloads?

“Dell [which doesn’t sell Unix servers] came out of
nowhere to capture 18 percent of the market, with 12,171 units,
according to Dataquest. Because the Linux operating system is a
derivative of Unix and doesn’t sell enough units to demand its own
category, Dataquest lumped it in with Unix for this market-share
survey.”

Sun, by the way, is top dog with 45% of this particular
market.
