proliferation of challengers suggests that the software empire has
a long way to go before it wins the peace.

“Two reasons are driving the development of alternatives to the
ubiquitous Internet Explorer (IE). First, micro-browsers for small
hardware such as cell phones and handheld Net devices are
challenging Microsoft, which was never able to replicate its
desktop dominance in these markets. Second, ‘open source’
developers see new opportunities in browsers that can be customized
