ComputerWorld: Comdex: Compaq quietly demos Net appliance

“Compaq Computer Corp. Tuesday showed off working prototypes
of an Internet access device aimed at consumers that the PC vendor
plans to ship sometime next year.

Similar to the Microsoft Network-based Web Companion devices
Microsoft Corp. debuted earlier at the show, one of the two desktop
devices showcased by Compaq was based on Windows CE and designed to
access the Microsoft online service… ‘But we are also looking at
other operating systems,’ emphasized Hedy Baker, public relations
manager for consumer products at Compaq.”
