” ‘Compaq has decided to end development for 32-bit Windows NT
on Alpha in late 1999,’ Steve Millmore, a Compaq spokesman, said
this morning. This does not mean the commitment to Microsoft and
64-bit Windows NT on Alpha is changing … Alpha in fact is the
development platform for 64-bit NT.’ “

” ‘Few Alpha installations are running NT… most are running
Open VMS or Tru64 Unix,’ agreed Dan Kusnetzky, an analyst at
International Data Corp. in Framingham, Mass. According to
Kusnetzky, almost 94% of all NT server shipments run on Intel Corp.
platforms.

Compaq, as a result, may choose to emphasize Linux as the
mass-volume operating system on Alpha…”

“Less than 5% of Alpha Processor’s sales comes from the Windows
NT market… ‘As a result, the short-term play for us is Linux,’
Bradshaw said.”
