ComputerWorld: Compaq shows big Intel iron [Proliant servers]

“The 8000 and 8500 models, which can combine the power of up to
eight Pentium III Xeon processors and be lashed together in
clusters, are being billed as Compaq’s Intel-based,
high-availability option for Internet service providers and
application service providers.
But the company hopes they
will also appeal to data center and data warehousing
managers.”

“The servers are an answer to businesses that need to scale
systems quickly and where reconfiguring in dynamic situations and
security ‘are the name of the game,’ said Enrico Pesatori, senior
vice president and general manager of the Enterprise Solutions and
Services Group.”

“Some observers said the eight-way servers add to Compaq’s more
powerful Alpha offerings at the high end, allowing it to attack the
enterprise market from above and below.”
