“Notebook PC vendors are finding it harder to ignore the growing
Linux buzz, and they are ready to do something about it.”
“Within 30 days, IBM Corp., Armonk, N.Y., plans to increase its
support of Linux by shipping a base model ThinkPad notebook for use
with the operating system, said Phil Hester, chief technology
officer for IBM’s Personal Systems Group. “We plan to ship a base
machine without any operating system on it so you could load any
form of Linux you want,” he said.”
“IBM is testing and validating Linux from Caldera Systems Inc.,
Orem, Utah; Pacific HiTech Inc., Oakland, Calif.; Red Hat Software
Inc., Research Triangle Park, N.C.; and SuSE Holding AG, Nuernberg,
Germany, on the ThinkPad platform, said Hester.”
