general manager of Compaq’s Enterprise Computing Group.

“Rose: Alpha has been a preferred platform for the Linux
community. . . . If you look at the market-share data, Linux is the
largest growth [area] in the total Unix marketplace. Some classes
of people are buying the open source software model. We’re making
sure that our platforms, whether they’re the Intel platforms we do
today and the Alpha platforms, are the best for those customers
utilizing the open source [model].”
