“Intel, Santa Clara, Calif., will push its name and platform
compatibility as it weighs in with more high-performance chips for
the server market this year. … So what must AMD do to succeed
against such staunch competition? VARs said stronger
marketing, a proven track record and more support for Linux
would go a long way.”
“AMD also would do well to forge an alliance with Linux
providers, said Paktronix’s [president Matthew] Marsh, adding that
Linux runs better on AMD’s processors than on Intel’s. ‘There
doesn’t seem to be much support from AMD for Linux yet,’ Marsh
said. ‘They may be shooting themselves in the foot. That’s a pity,
because a lot of Linux people like AMD.’
But an alliance with Linux would make more sense when AMD offers
multiprocessing support, said Sam Ockman, president of San
Francisco-based Penguin Computing, which builds branded Linux
systems. ‘AMD works great under Linux,’ said Ockman. ‘But in the
Linux market, everyone’s interested in more than one
processor.’ “
