Cyber India Online: Will IBM Click In Its Linux Drive?

“He came, he saw, but did he conquer? The hush-hush visit of IBM
chairman Samuel J Palmisano (51) to India for the first time last
week stirred a hornet’s nest and made the IT industry wonder about
the Big Blue’s game plan in the sub-continent.

“Coming as it does in the wake of similar visits by the likes of
Microsoft’s Bill Gates, Dell Inc’s Michael Dell, and Sun
Microsystems’ Scott McNealy to India during the last six months,
Palmisano’s three-day trip to Bangalore and Delhi turned out to be
more intriguing as his itinerary was kept under wraps and the final
outcome shrouded in mystery.

“However, hard officials of the IBM’s Indian subsidiary tried to
keep Palmisano’s schedule out of media glare. His business like
interactions with Indian ministers, officials, corporate honchos
and partners gave away IBM plans to promote the open source
platform (read Linux), as it has become the new mantra for its
emerging e-business…”
