“We began our four-week series of salary surveys on open source
applications last week with a look at Apache positions. This week
we focus on Linux, the darling of operating system dissidents
everywhere. Sure, there are open source applications with more
available jobs (Perl). And yes, there are open source jobs that pay
better (Sendmail). But Linux is, well, Linux. It’s the original
open source pioneer and everyone’s favorite underdog.”

“And there is plenty to mention about Linux. When we last
checked the number of available Linux jobs on dice.com…in
September 1999, we found 150 listed nationwide. Currently dice
contains a whopping 543 jobs, an increase of over 200%
; an
expansion roughly on par with the overall increase in open source
availabilities….”
