Irfanview or Photoshop in WINE, the Windows compatibility layer for
Linux) was the sole free, open-source Linux/Unix editor to not only
read the IPTC caption information dumped into JPEGs by Photoshop,
PhotoMechanic and other proprietary programs used by professional
photographers.
