Duke of URL: A More Friendly Linux: Linux Mandrake 7.2 Review

“When diving into Mandarke’s latest user-friendly,
RPM-enabled distribution, I was a little skeptical. After all, what
more could they change? I began thinking, maybe it’s time to try on
Debian for my production box. It didn’t take more than about 10
minutes on Mandrake 7.2 to completely change my way of
thinking.
I found the interface to be extremely simple to work
with and effective and even has the option for eye-candy for those
users with ADD. This proves one thing: Mandrake 7.2 is as much as a
breath of fresh air for a Linux user as it is for a Windows
user.”

“…Mandrake 7.2 adds a whole load of new configuration options
for their already brilliant DrakX installer. Probably the most
notable update is the ability to choose between XFree86 3.3.6 or
4.0.1. Not only can you choose between the two, but the installer
will try its hardest to get you up and going with 3D acceleration
enabled if you have a card that is capable of doing so. While this
didn’t work quite right with any of my cards, it’s a good first
effort, and probably leaves you with only a couple more setups to
take care of if 3D acceleration is your thing.”

“Also added right from the installation is mouse wheel support.
No longer do you need to go in and edit your XF86Config file by
hand. Mandrake’s installer detects most wheel mice and can get them
working right off the bat for you. … DrakConf has also brought a
new utility with it, internet connection sharing This was always
possible on Linux systems, as it was on Windows systems, you just
needed to know how to set it up, which could be a real bear at
times. Yes, internet connection sharing doesn’t always get set up
correctly with Mandrake’s utility, but it does pretty well, and
leaves you will only a couple options to tweak even in the
worst-case scenario.”
