The Soyo SY-K7ADA is Soyo’s first Socket A DDR
motherboard. Originally, Soyo was planning on utilizing the VIA
KT266, which has been delayed several times. Why the AMD760 was out
of the question, I’ll never know. But my guess is that the problems
with the memory hub (when adding 3 DIMM slots), short supplies, and
AMD’s reluctance to produce them in large quantities made Soyo shy
away from this high-performance DDR soloution.Up until now I never realized it, but upon inspection of ALi’s
webpage, you find quite an extensive webpage on their chipsets and
Linux. On the page are downloads of everything from IDE drivers to
audio drivers and full instructions on installing them. There’s
even step-by-step instructions for those of you who aren’t familiar
with Linux.This is definitely encouraging from a chipset company and I
think this will go a long way to having their chipsets become quite
polished under Linux.The SY-K7ADA is a great choice if you’re looking for stability
and quality. Still, its performance, layout flaws and the premium
of DDR over SDR SDRAM hurt this motherboard slightly and should
probably send you considering an AMD 760 motherboard if you need
DDR SDRAM or a KT133A motherboard if you’re more a value-conscious
consumer.
