“With their latest release, SuSE moves to the front of the pack.
SuSE Version 7.1 has emerged, incorporating features that users
have been clamoring for over the last few months. Not the least of
which are kernel 2.4, XFree86 4.02 and KDE 2.01, three of the
largest and most popular upgrades for Linux users that have
appeared this year. In addition SuSE also maintains backwards
compatibility for users who are more conservative by including
kernel 2.2.18 and KDE 1.1.2.”
“Keeping with their own tradition, SuSE continues the legacy of
including more applications than any other distribution on the
market. SuSE Professional includes 7 CDs or 1 DVD, encompassing
over 2000 applications. It’s smaller sibling, SuSE Personal, comes
with 3 CDs – 2 binary CDs and 1 source CD. In addition to the
software, SuSE also continues with a strong commitment to
documentation. SuSE Professional ships with 4 manuals, including a
huge. 1000 page, volume, that could act as a solid guide to
learning Linux. The Personal edition comes with 3 manuals.”
“Additionally, SuSE also supports a large number of languages.
This stems from SuSE’s concentration on the international
community, while the US was glutted with numerous English-only
distributions. This gives SuSE a wider audience and a vast appeal
in many European and Asian markets. Places where most English-only
distros will never go.”
“For this review, we looked at both the Professional and
Personal editions. We installed each version on the same hardware
and, for the most part, the comments that follow apply to both
editions. However, we will discuss the differences later on in the
article.”
