Birthdays and anniversaries are times to step back and reflect a
bit on the years gone by and the years ahead. They should be
festive, yet tuned with a respectful dignity.
To heck with that! We’re five years old today! And if I may shed
my journalistic voice for that more appropriate to my culture and
upbringing: wooo hoooo!
(This, unfortunately, says reveals terrible things about my
so-called culture and upbringing, but so be it!)
Exactly five years ago, Linux Today appeared on the
Internet, announcing Apache 1.3.2’s release, of all things. The
site’s goal was to put forth all news related to Linux, Free
Software, and Open Source. That goal is still the same, as we try
to bring you technology, business, and community news all in a
24-hour format. We must be doing something right, too. Last year, I
reported that our traffic numbers have never been higher, and I am
pleased to say that this year I can say the same thing. It is a
wonderful birthday present to get when you realize that you are are
a growing part of the Linux community.
Over the course of the last 365 days, we have undergone a major
design change and have deepened our partnership with sister site
internetnews.com in order to bring you more original Linux and open
source news. Outside of the site, we are about to launch our third
Enterprise seminar in Washington DC, this time with the help of Jon
“maddog” Hall.
As managing editor, no one could be more proud of the work
accomplished on Linux Today, but I am also cognizant that
I am one of a long line of writers and editors who have contributed
to the quality and content of this site. It is their hard work that
allows me to continue working on such a great news outlet, and for
that I am very thankful.
Linux Today would be just another boring news site
without the input of its readers, who provide talkbacks and story
contributions that shape the voice of this site just as much as I
do.
To give you an idea of just how much of a voice, last Thursday,
a reader named “kappa” posted the 250,000th talkback to Linux
Today. One-quarter of a million talkbacks is a stunning
number, a milestone that all readers and participants should be
proud of. As for contributions, we are coming up on the 25,000 mark
for suggested stories.
So thank you, dear readers, for helping us grow for the last
five years, and the years to come!
Peace,
Brian Proffitt
