Enterprise Linux Today: Linuxcare Boosts Linux-Based Printing, Storage In Windows Environments

“Linuxcare has unveiled a set of professional services that help
accelerate development and deployment of Linux-based network
storage and printing appliances in Windows NT/mixed environments.
The new services leverage Linuxcare’s deep knowledge of the core
Linux operating system and Samba, which provides seamless file and
print services to Windows clients using Microsoft’s SMB/CIFS
protocols.”

“As Linux continues to gain acceptance in large
organizations, network services that have been available in Unix
and NT including file and print capabilities must be architected
into the open-source software. Linuxcare’s new services build on
innovations around the core Linux operating system and the Samba
appliance kit, a collection of development programs bundled with
Samba.
Many of Linuxcare’s contributions to these project
areas have been accepted into the next versions of Linux and
Samba.”

“Although Linuxcare’s Winbind and Unified File Locking related
services represent functionality in forthcoming Linux and Samba
versions, its services take immediate advantage of these
innovations for printing and storage appliance vendors today.”
