“This HOWTO should work with Voodoo4 and 5 AGP/PCI cards.
However testing was only done with a Voodoo5 AGP [as that was all
that was available to us]. It also is written to allow you to
utilize DRI support under XFree86 4.0.1 as opposed to the
traditional methods.”

“These instructions assume that you are working from the command
line, logged in as root, and are using the default installation of
Red Hat based on the 2.2.16 kernel. A clean install of the
distribution is preferred, but not required.”
