Compaq Computer Corp. is considering releasing source code
for part of Tru64, its 64-bit version of the Unix operating
system.

“Although late to the game — other Unix vendors have been
releasing code for months — the move could give Compaq an
advantage in the rarefied atmosphere of high-end 64-bit
platforms.”

“A holdover from Digital Equipment Corp., which Compaq acquired
in 1998, Tru64 is offered as an option (along with Linux) on
Compaq’s Alpha servers and is planned for its NonStop Himalaya line
when those servers move to Alpha from the MIPS processor.”
