“The selection of Transmeta over Intel Corp. or rival Advanced
Micro Devices Inc. marks the first time a major PC manufacturer has
announced it will incorporate a Transmeta chip in its product line.
Although Transmeta has been in existence since 1995, the Santa
Clara, Calif., company didn’t unveil its first processors, marketed
under the brand name Crusoe, until this January.”

“Additional manufacturers are expected to announce products
featuring the Crusoe chip next month at PC Expo in New York.

“Transmeta will have a big presence at PC Expo,” Chapman said. “We
will have notebook products on display and announced at PC
Expo.”

“The Gateway appliances will feature the TM3120, which consumes
only 1 Watt of power during normal operation and as little as 20mW
(milli-Watts) in sleep mode, far less than current chips available
from Intel and AMD. The reduction in power also means the chip runs
cooler and doesn’t need a heat sink or fans required by today’s
mainstream processors. The elimination of those devices enables
manufacturers to produce more compact devices.”
