“Coming from IBM, the announcement essentially finalises the
mainstreaming of Linux – elevating it from the ranks of grassroot
upstart to the same playing field as the Solaris system that Sun
Microsystems sells with its Unix servers, the Windows NT system,
and AIX, which is IBM’s version of the Unix platform.”

“”Linux is evolving to an industry standard,” IBM said in a
statement, emphasising the “public” ownership of Linux as a key
selling point in the company’s decision to throw its influence and
more resources behind the movement.”
