“AT A time when proprietary commercial IT vendors are rushing to
wrap themselves in the opensource flag, some stratospheric navel
gazing by two of its most ardent supporters should be cause for
everyone to take a breath. First came Jamie Zawinski’s two open
letters to the Mozilla.org community, announcing his reasons for
stepping down as America Online’s client division (nee Netscape)
open source evangelist, and resignation from the company.
Mozilla.org was the entity created a year ago to further the
Netscape browser platform after its death roll with rival
Microsoft.”

“Shortly after Zawinski’s announcement, another Netscape
veteran, John Giannandrea joined him by walking out the front door
for thelast time.”

“These two high-level defections from Netscape’s Mozilla.org
project should be cause for serious soul searching.”

“Did I say “Netscape’s Mozilla project”? While technically
Mozilla.org is a separate open source entity, many people regarded
it merely as a front for Netscape and now AOL, or at least that the
parent proprietary company has too great a sway in Mozilla’s
operations.”
