“Essentially, there are three ways to implement a VPN:

  1. “A proprietary solution, using an appliance-like VPN server,
    such as Cisco VPN, based on IPSec
  2. “An Open Source implementation of IPSec, such as FreeS/WAN
  3. “A non-IPSec VPN, like OpenVPN
