“International Business Machines Corp. gave Linux, the free
operating system that is presenting itself as an alternative to
Microsoft Windows, a huge boost yesterday by announcing it would
offer 24-hour global technical support to the upstart system. IBM
also said it would build hardware and software to work with Linux
and try to speed up deployment by working with four commercial
Linux distributors: Caldera Systems Inc., Pacific HiTech Inc., Red
Hat Software Inc., and SuSE Holding AG.”

“We’re doing this to really help the Linux environment grow,”
said Jon Prial, IBM’s director of integrated solutions.
