The free operating system is beginning to look more and
more like a viable alternative to Microsoft Windows, and software
firms with connections to it have suddenly become market
darlings….

“The once-obscure computer operating system is widely available
free — off the Internet — but is being tweaked, packaged and
marketed in a way that consumers can’t resist.”

“At least, that’s the bet a lot of investors are making. The
market’s sudden obsession with Linux, fuelled largely by Dell
Computer Corp.’s announcement last week that it plans to use the
upstart technology in a new high-end server, turned a flurry of
tiny, revenue-starved startups into stock darlings and formidable
players in a blossoming niche.”
