“I have used Caldera 2.4, Red Hat 6.2, Mandrake 7.0,
TurboLinux (forget which version), Debian, SuSE 6.x, and briefly
looked at Corel Linux.”
“Corel Linux is an excellent new user distro, but has the
disadvantage that it cannot (easily) use the large amount of
software available in ‘rpm’ format. It also doesn’t contain a lot
of the neat Internet-related twists of Caldera 2.4, and is looking
somewhat aged now (it has not been refreshed recently).”
“Caldera 2.4 is an excellent Internet workstation. … The only
problem I’ve had with Caldera 2.4, as a home user, is that Netscape
is unstable on Caldera 2.4. … Caldera also won’t run GNOME
software, but the average new user will not miss it because
StarOffice and Netscape Communicator solve 99% of what the average
new user wants from an OS, and KDE solves the rest.”
“Mandrake started out as an easier-to-use version of Red Hat
Linux that included KDE rather than GNOME as the standard desktop.
Their KDE setup is still much better than Red Hat’s. As a home user
desktop it is probably preferable to Red Hat Linux. On the other
hand, Caldera’s pre-configured Internet software definitely makes
Caldera easier for the average new user…”
