Information Week: Linux Training Gets Formal

“Recent vendor moves in training bolster what IT professionals
already know: For IT administrators and managers alike, Linux
training isn’t just an added plus to their resumés–it’s a
must-have. Hewlett-Packard and Red Hat Inc. unveiled major Linux
training initiatives last week, and IBM kicked off a Linux
education program earlier this month.”

“These offerings are a far cry from the informal classes and
user-group information-sharing sessions that have traditionally
marked the Linux learning curve. What sets the newer training
programs apart are their multiple user levels–from programmer to
CIO–and a variety of technical and nontechnical classes.”

“The driving force behind more formal Linux training is
basically the bottom line, says Stacey Quandt, a Linux analyst at
Giga Information Group. “Linux is low-cost and it’s cool. So it’s
been rapidly adopted, especially by the faction of people who want
anything but Microsoft,” Quandt says. “And business executives want
to understand Linux because they need to align their IT strategies
with their businesses.”
