Alteon … announced Wednesday that it is now offering a Linux
driver for its AceNIC PCI Gigabit Ethernet server adapters. The
driver was developed in conjunction with CERN, the European
Laboratory for Particle Physics.

At a press conference … at Networld+Interop, Alteon and IBM
[also] unveiled an agreement in which IBM will use Alteon’s Gigabit
Ethernet technology in network interface cards (NICs) for its
RS/6000 and S/390 servers.

Technology developed by Alteon now will allow NICs and switches
to use Jumbo Frames to communicate with devices that understand
them, while using standard frames for the rest of the network.

Officials said the technology will let users deploy Jumbo
Frame-supporting devices wherever they are needed in the network,
and will eliminate the need to logically isolate Jumbo Frame
traffic.
