InfoWorld: Apple to introduce Mac OS X this summer

“Apple’s new permanent CEO, Steve Jobs, on Wednesday unveiled
pieces of the Mac OS X operating system due to ship this
summer….”

According to Jobs, Mac OS X will be “open source.” However,
because “open source” is a term that not all members of the
computer industry use in the same way, it was unclear whether or
not the new Mac OS X kernel, code-named Darwin, will be managed and
upgraded by an oversight committee, similar to the way the Linux
operating system is controlled.

“The OS will also get a new user interface — named Aqua —
which appears to enhance current interface capabilities and improve
what Jobs called the interface’s “fit and finish.”
