“Caldera Systems got a jump on rival Red Hat Software,
announcing this week an updated version of OpenLinux that features
an enhanced kernel, simplified graphical install, graphical
interface, and several bundled pieces of software including
WordPerfect 8.”

“OpenLinux 2.2’s burnished kernel, called Version 2.2.5, is now
significantly faster with systems containing at least 16MB of
memory, the company said. Also new is the ability to read Windows
NT file system drives as well as Windows 98 FAT 32 drives, and the
ability to deal with long file names on CD-ROMs.”

“Perhaps the most dramatic change is the operating system’s
graphical installation routine and the updated KDE 1.1 graphical
interface and improved plug-and-play capability, Caldera said.”
