“Although it started out as the plaintiff in a lawsuit it filed
against graphics processor maker Nvidia nearly two years ago, Intel
announced Monday that the two companies have settled their
disagreements, inked a new patent cross-licensing deal — and, in a
surprise move, said that Intel will pay Nvidia $1.5 billion to
boot.

“Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) sued Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) in February
2009 over differences the two companies had over a chipset patent
license.

“The differences revolved around whether or not Nvidia’s
then-existing license gave it access to Intel’s Core i7 “Nehalem”
processor design, which moves the memory controller into the CPU.
Intel said no, Nvidia said yes.”
