The feds may see Windows as the dominant platform and Linux
as the upstart, but the two operating systems looked a lot alike
last week as they battled for enterprise credibility.

“Red Hat Inc., the leading Linux distributor, said it will pay
$674 million to buy Cygnus Solutions, which makes development tools
for putting Linux in embedded systems, servers and desktops.”

“Microsoft, meanwhile, teamed up with Unisys to demonstrate an
array of 52 servers running Windows 2000 and using off-the-shelf
hardware and software. The Comdex demo was designed to counter
questions about whether Windows is sufficiently scalable and
reliable for enterprise applications.”
