“For months, the internet fumed. What had Gnome done wrong?
According to Shuttleworth, there were many reasons. First and
foremost, Shuttleworth claimed that Gnome’s developers had ideas of
where to take desktop interfaces that Ubuntu did not share. With
Ubuntu’s own UI team, it was felt that they could create a user
experience that was more in line with what their audience wanted
without compromising on Gnome.

“Now, over a year later, is it still an issue? I’ve been
searching the Internet and I’m just not seeing the animosity that
existed when Unity first hit the proverbial shelf. You have
diehards with every operating system, and many very vocal people
fear change. Is that what happened here?”
