“The “Ian” in Debian Linux is Ian Murdock. Murdock has also been
on the research staff at the University of Arizona and coauthored
the “Swarm” storage system. He’s now president and CEO of Progeny
Linux Systems, headquartered in Indianapolis. Progeny is
commercializing Progeny Debian and the Linux NOW clustering system.

“Ian’s best known as the co-founder, with his wife Debra, of the
Debian Project and Debian GNU/Linux. He’s been employed as a
programmer by the FSF, network administrator by Purdue University,
and researcher by University of Arizona, among others. He’s on the
board of the Open Source Initiative, and was an early contributor
to Linux Journal, Linux International, and the Linux Standard
Base.”

“Nowadays, most of Ian’s attention goes to Progeny Linux
Systems, the company whose president he is. Along with the Progeny
Debian distribution, Progeny Debian, Progeny has product and
service offerings based on NOW (network of workstations). NOW is a
kind of clustering product, one which emphasizes manageability at
least as much as performance, the traditional selling feature of
Linux clusters.”
