Linux just works? Not for everyone!

[ Thanks to Locutus

“You read about it everywhere on forums, mailing lists
and in just about every Linux verses windows flame war. Linux just
works is claimed. Then there is the counter claim that Linux didn’t
do this or that had no drivers. So what is the story here? Does
Linux just work or not? Well, it does and it doesn’t.

“The phrase, just works, is a pretty blanket statement. It has
no specific target to refute against. Linux just works you say? It
doesn’t for me. It does for me. Does not. Does. Does not. Does.
Hmmm, I seem to remember those sort of arguments in
kindergarten.

“There are many things which Linux is very good at. Hardware
detection and configuration for one. As long as your hardware is
supported by the operating system then it “just works”. The same as
any other operating system. What about software? As long as you
stick with supported software supplied by the distribution then it
“just works”, mostly. Then again, that is the exact same scenario
for other operating systems.”
