Linux Magazine: Debian Founder Launches Commercial Company [Interview with Ian Murdock]

“After a four year hiatus to finish his college degree and
generally work on the cutting edge of computer science, Ian Murdock
is back, now as CEO of Debian-based Progeny Linux Systems. Last
week Progeny announced that it has secured its first round of
funding. The cash came with some help from Murdock’s old Debian
buddy, Bruce Perens, and his Linux Capital Group — a venture
capital fund started by Perens to seed Open Source projects.”

Progeny’s aim is to become the first commercial developer
of network of workstation (NOW) software — technology that has
been under development in universities for a decade….

“The idea that was first presented by Bruce and the Linux
Capital Group was to take Debian and to do something really great
with it. Essentially we have identified a need and we are building
a system specifically designed to address that need very well. The
need is how do you use Linux in large scale computing environments
where you have large numbers of computers?”
