“The first thing you need to do is choose your firewall/router
PC. I used a p75 with a 500mb hard drive, CD-ROM, and 40 mb of RAM
which was donated to my LUG. SmoothWall 0.9.9 works on any Pentium
class processor, 16mb RAM, and takes up only 44mb of hard drive
space fully installed.

“Once you have chosen the PC you’ll use as your firewall/router,
you’ll need to install the hardware to make it work. For sharing
internet access on your LAN, you’ll need 2 NIC’s (Network Interface
Cards) installed in the PC to be used as the firewall/router. Make
sure you get cards that are supported. In this demonstration, we
used RealTek and LinkSys NICs. Install the cards as per the
directions that came with them. At this point you do not need to
install any software…”
