“There are important messages in this: attack Linus, says the
fine print, and Linux will thunder on regardless —
but you? You will have millions of people around the world on your
case. Linux is everybody, not just Linus. Perhaps this is a reason
why the Torvalds family can act like the nice people they are, not
cordoned off behind press agents and security people. Linus is one
hacker among a loose brotherhood of equals, a ‘common elite’, the
kind of relationship with many religions and political systems have
striven for and fallen short of.

“The PenguinMeister wrote a book, and called it ‘just for fun.’
He tells us that’s the secret to getting him to come to a
conference: make it easy for him to come, make it fun, have some
real content (not just marketing). Not the forced-hilarity
commercial kind of fun, but the laid-back, playful, amateur,
spontaneous fun that characterises so much of open source.
Computer-illiterates reading that sentence might think I’ve been
staring at monitors for too long, but yes, computer software can be
fun, and we had some (software and fun) at LCA2003.
