“A year ago this Mother’s Day weekend, I converted my mom, a 67
year old mother of 3, and grandmother of 4, to Linux.

“Mom’s not at all computer savvy.

“With regards to computers, she barely knew a right-click from a
left-click, and didn’t deal well with navigating menus, or changing
settings of any kind. Her computer experience consisted of simple
data entry at her job before she’d retired. She’d learned to use
her computer to read and write email, surf the web, play some java
based online games and mahjongg type solitaire games, as well as
work an instant messenger so she could yap with the grandkids. She
also used a word processor from time to time. I had installed a
firewall and an anti-virus to help keep ‘the nasties’ out, but
since the anti-virus had to be running all the time, it did put a
bit of strain on the machine, slowing it down a bit–even with the
upgrades I’d done…”
