“Having been born in the forties makes me a true baby boomer. It
also means that digital and micro electronics came relatively late
in my life. When I was young, we played around with radios. Using a
device which you have built with your very own hands is very
satisfying. Like the radios of my youth, I would rather build my
own computers than buy one ready-made. This week, I’d like to give
you a tour of my computer setup, and share some do-it-yourself
system building resources with you.”

“My first PC was an IBM PC XT. When I purchased it, I was sad to
give up my trusty Apple ][, but the handwriting was on the wall.
There was no stopping the Intel technology and we all knew it. As a
software developer this meant opportunities galore. But, even then,
I didn’t just buy an XT off the shelf….”

“My computers are ever evolving. There is always brand new stuff
being mixed in with the legacy equipment. For instance, you can
tell that my video card is pretty old. When I have enough
spares, I may be able to put together another machine. The best
thing of all is that I don’t have to add to Bill Gates’ billions.
(He hates it when that happens.)
