“SuSE’s US operation today laid off roughly three-fourths of its
staff, paring the unit down to a skeleton crew of 12.”

“SuSE Inc president Volker Wiegand confirmed the report,
although the company’s public relations people previously denied
it, an exercise in untruth and “bad communications” that Wiegand
feared “will have consequences.”

“Wiegand declined to discuss how much money SuSE will save, but
it should be in the neighborhood of $4 million or $5 million a year
at least, maybe more.”

“Wiegand said SuSE US has to get profitable sooner than what was
written in the old business plan. “The timeline is different from a
year ago,” he said, when Linux was a high-flier.”

“With a staff of a dozen people, he figured the unit should be
able to turn the corner in six months rather than the end of 2002,
the old target.”
