LinuxHardware.org: AMD Brings 400MHz FSB To The Table

“Looking back to our article from last September in which we
featured the Athlon XP 2400+ vs. Intel Pentium 4 2.4GHz and 2.8GHz,
it’s been a heated battle. In that article we showed how AMD was a
clear leader in performance. Back then we didn’t have dual channel
DDR on either platform so it was a level playing field with 266MHz
FSB and single channel memory on both platforms. Look ahead about a
week and you’ll find the Athlon XP 2700+ entering our reviews with
a new 333MHz FSB and extending the AMD lead with only a bit more
clock speed.

“Jumping ahead to February, we finally got our hands on a
Pentium 4 with Hyper-Threading and a new ‘Barton’ based Athlon XP.
In that review Intel made a nice comeback, taking the lead in
several benchmarks, especially in our multi-threaded kernel
compile. By that point both Intel and AMD had dual channel DDR
chipsets which helped both platform with memory bottlenecks. AMD
though was lagging by almost 900MHz and just couldn’t keep up. Last
month, in our last review, Intel jumped over 166MHz DDR memory and
went straight to the 200MHz stuff. This took their quad-pumped FSB
to an impressive 800MHz. Since Intel was already holding a lead at
this point, they increased their performance lead while introducing
a few new technologies that will take some time for Linux
distributions to catch up with.

“Now it’s time for AMD to step up with their 200MHz-based
processor…”
