“After numerous delays and distractions, I am finally taking the
plunge with a first public release of my GridSlammer game engine,”
said GridSlammer mastermind Thad Phettplace. GridSlammer is an Open
Source, object oriented game software developer’s kit (SDK), “for
rapid development of isolinear style video games (think of the
visual style of Diablo or Mech Commander).” he added.”

“It currently ships with a reference game called DroidWars and
will compile on both Linux and Windows, Phettplace said. “This
is very much an Alpha release, so there is much to be done on both
GridSlammer and the DroidWars game, but in keeping with the
‘release early release often’ philosophy of Open Source… here it
is.”

“GridSlammer also is an application program interface (API) for
creating cross-platform video games, Phettplace said. “This tool
kit does not try to embrace every type of video game. If you are
interested in writing a 3D first-person shooter type game,
GridSlammer is NOT what you are looking for. If, on the other hand,
you need a powerful game engine that renders in an isolinear,
eye-in-the-sky manner, then you’ve come to the right place.” Screen
shots are available on GridSlammer’s Web site, he added.”
