“IBM believes the new line of servers was an obvious response to
increasing business demand. ‘The e-business infrastructure is the
foundation of the new economy,’ said Bill Zeitler, vice president
of the IBM Server Group. ‘The e-business infrastructure has to
support different types of workloads, and, fundamentally,
e-businesses will require different types of support: data and
transaction workload, Web and application workload, appliance or
application-specific work.’ Different buyers of all sizes, he said,
were also taken into account when these servers were designed.”

“The large Linux presence in Big Blue’s new server line is an
expression of IBM’s continuing embrace of open standards, Zeitler
said. “‘To us, it was clear that the open movement was going to
fundamentally change the way that people build and deploy
applications. The technologies of Linux and Apache and XML
[extensible markup language] and Java and EJB [enterprise Java
beans] would allow people to build and deploy applications in an
open and transportable way.'”

“The eServer family, intended to replace all of IBM’s previously
existing servers consists of four different mainframe types and 16
models. The Linux-based xSeries has nine models available. The
zSeries is touted by the company as “The most reliable
mission-critical data transaction servers on earth.” Rogue Wave
Software and Rational Software are among the new software companies
announcing specific Linux products for the z900.”
