LinuxPR: Linux Class comes to Dayton, Ohio

After several months of planning and research, the Physics
Department of Sinclair Community College located in Dayton, Ohio is
offering a course in Linux.
The course entitled, “Fundamentals
of Linux for the Scientist” will cover some basic topics that will
give students a strong foundation for using Linux as a PC operating
system. Students will be introduced the Open Source movement and
learn the benefits of Web based resources.”

“Basic skills to be developed include, 1) conducting a pre
install hardware evaluation 2) completing the three RedHat 6.1
installation options (server, workstation and custom) 3) setup a
dual boot system 4) learn intermediate adminstration skills and 5)
learn how to install, upgrade and remove applications.”

“The Physics department is very excited about this newest
curriculum development especially with the recent DOJ decision
against Microsoft. Students need to realize the strengths and
advantages of the Linux operating system. This course plans to meet
this need. Additional course offerings will be developed soon to
meet the expected increase in demand.”
