Everybody knows about Perl–it’s probably the most used
language on the planet for Internet development. It’s quick, easy
to use, and if you use it a lot, it also becomes a lot of fun to
use. For people like me who’ve been using it for years, it’s
difficult to adjust, but for all of its great abilities Perl has a
couple of annoying “features” that can sometimes be frustrating.
Its openness can also add to its complexity, and large projects can
sometimes, but not always, be a bit a of a handful.

“It’s hard to criticize Perl though–I’m not a complete
evangelist, but I can’t think of a recent project that I haven’t at
least tried to complete in Perl. In fact, most of the projects I’m
currently working on are Perl-based.”

“There is an alternative, though. It’s relatively new–less than
a quarter of the age of Perl, and provides many of the same
features. The alternative is called Python, and in this new series
I’ll be looking at how to make the jump from Perl to Python.”
