LinuxProgramming: Orion Server 1.0.3: A Commercial EJB Server for the Rest of Us

Among Web application servers, the Orion Application Server
is sort of an odd duck. It is written entirely in Java, runs on
Linux (and a variety of other platforms), doesn’t cost very much
($1,500 per deployed system with free development licenses), and
its really fast. But few people have heard of the parent company,
Sweden’s Evermind Data, nor the product, Orion Application Server,
which is a shame.

“Before delving too much in obscure Java acronyms, the term Web
application server spans a plethora of meanings, so some
definitions are in order. In Orion, you get an all-in-one server
application that provides a Web server, a Java servlet engine, and
an Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) container. It also supports the Java
Messaging Service, JMS, and a host of other Java
specifications.”

“Orion is one of the newcomers to the Web application server
market. Orion has nowhere near the name recognition of competitors
WebSphere from IBM and WebLogic from Bea Systems. WebSphere and
WebLogic together own most of the commercial Web application server
market.”
