There are various sites that will tell you what Mac OS X is
– here, here and here. But, dear Linux users, what I’d like to do
is tell you what it’s not, before you get too excited and go and
buy one of those (strangely enough) toaster shaped Apple G4 Cubes
to install the beast.

“It’s not X. Despite the name, Mac OS X does not include a
distribution of XFree86’s X-windows software, and so right now it
will not be as seamlessly Unix as you might want. Frankly, if Apple
had included X I would have been very surprised, given Apple’s long
had a reputation for having the greatest graphics system out there.
X is still very much a legacy from the old days, when graphics came
second behind the Unix command line functionality, and to step down
from Apple’s already classy graphics software to X (which on many
people’s systems does still no display true type fonts correctly)
would be a nightmare marketing move for Apple.”

“It’s not Free. Not as in Beer, not as in Speech. In fact, you
have to pay US $30 for the privilege of beta-testing Mac OS X,
unless you are an accredited Apple developer. Furthermore, Apple
has not made public any plans to release the source code of Mac OS
X under any open source licence, let alone the Linux-standard GPL.
So you are going to be compromising both your ideals and your
wallet if you switch camps to OS X. Most people are expecting to
shell out around $100 Aussie dollars for the full release of Mac OS
X, not to mention the cost of eventually upgrading all your
software from Mac OS 9 to run natively in the radically different
X.”
