“Early this week Linuxtoday.com.au was made aware of an
outstanding new E-commerce site launch. Although hundreds if
not thousands of new online businesses are launched each week, this
one had a major difference – it was built and is entirely hosted
using Linux software.
The site was sydneypix.com, part of the
global (insert your city here)pix.com network, and the Executive
Producer was Simon Monk. Linuxtoday.com.au spoke virtually with Mr
Monk this week about this new and exciting site launch.”

“[Q:] In what ways could you see that using
Linux as a base o/s for developing (and hosting?) your new site was
an advantage over developing under alternative platforms such as
Microsoft Windows or the Mac OS?

[A:] The site was always designed for a Linux
machine running Apache/PHP/MySQL. This combination of tools had
been proven over and over again on previous web sites we have
built. With the site being constantly accessed from people all over
the world we needed it up all the time. We are happy to say we have
had 100% uptime since the inception of SydneyPix.com. Linux
stability is simply legendary … or maybe it is actually as it
should be, but we’re all so used to Windows NT we perceive it as
such!”

“[Q:] Did you seek the help of contractors or
other companies in developing your site under Linux? If so, did you
find that there was a skilled work force available to help you
develop the site, or was it hard to find people with the
qualifications you needed?

[A:] Well, this is what I/we do for a living so
from this perspective it was relatively easy! I am Executive
Producer with HotHouse, and my developer Matt, was one of our
programmers until he broke off to form LinuxWorx. We knew all the
likely issues beforehand, and knew how to ship a site in record
time. Its not so hard when you all understand the rules.”
