“So far the wider public debate has been mainly concerned with
which and how many parts should be cut from the carcass of
Microsoft’s “500lb gorilla”. Let’s look at the options and what
they mean for the Linux community:”

Slice Windows from Microsoft… The big
question from a Linux perspective is whether, freed from its
Windows obligations, the rump company would develop Linux versions
of key Microsoft applications. …even if you regard Linux as being
strictly for servers, having access to Microsoft applications and
tools will break down board level and CIO resistance to Linux.”

Cast Internet Explorer Adrift… I can
barely believe anyone would be stupid enough to seriously suggest
this as a remedy. … It would be more significant if this remedy
were extended to include all Internet server software
too.”

Three Baby Bills… The interesting thing
about this solution is that it flattens the software industry
playing field. … From a Linux point of view this solution would
see real competition enter the market.”
